9/27 (Sat) Asahi Culture Center Online Lecture: Global Trends Seen in the Chopin International Piano Competition

Asahi Culture Center Held online

Japan Philharmonic Orchestra x Pitina Chopin Concert Commemorative Lecture

Tetsunori Kato / Director of the Education Office, All Japan Piano Teachers Association

The Chopin International Piano Competition is the world's most prestigious competition, held every five years, a remarkably long cycle. It vividly reflects the trends of each era, and simply looking back at the results allows us to read the movements of the music world and the world at large.

In the 1980s and 90s, we gradually began to see more and more Japanese pianists studying abroad competing and making a name for themselves, and as we entered the 21st century, Asian countries such as South Korea and China began to make their presence felt, changing the landscape of power on the international stage. Meanwhile, the 2010s saw the rise of unique talent from Europe and young Asian pianists who had studied or lived in North America for an early age. In recent years, music education in Southeast Asia and Central Asia has rapidly risen to prominence, creating a new trend on the international stage.

These changes are not unique to the music industry; they are curiously linked to global trends. If we view the level of support for music education and culture and the arts as one indicator of how a country is investing in its future, the arts can sometimes act as a mirror, anticipating and reflecting social trends.

In this course, we will trace the history of international piano competitions, focusing on the Chopin Competition, and consider the changes in music and the world, as well as its future. (Lecturer's notes)
