[Obituary] Joji Yuasa

Joji Yuasa, one of Japan's leading postwar composers, passed away on July 21st at the age of 94.
He has produced numerous works ranging from orchestral to piano, chamber music, electronic music, film music, and children's songs.
With "the feeling of unheardness" as his keyword, he overwhelmed listeners by freely developing acoustic energy with a precision that could be described as mathematical. He was also a great composer who was deeply devoted to Matsuo Basho and others, and who constructed a unique worldview based on a sensibility unique to the Japanese.
With the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, we commissioned and premiered "Inner Tactile Universe V" (2002) as part of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra Series, and "A Gaze into the Primordial Ⅲ" in 2005. Both pieces have been performed many times since then, and have become established as important pieces in the orchestral repertoire that Japan is proud of.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for his many years of great contributions to the development of Japan's music scene, and offer our deepest condolences.
