[Reason for award]
For 43 years, Nishiyama Nobuo worked at Yomiuri Travel Co., Ltd., where he was responsible for arranging travel, accommodation, instrument transportation, and other matters for numerous Japanese orchestras traveling overseas for performances. He has been in charge of 14 orchestras, covering a total of 59 overseas performances*, including those that were full members of the Association of Japanese Symphony Orchestras. (*Including cancellations due to COVID-19, etc.)
For orchestras, overseas performances are extremely significant, further honing the orchestra's capabilities and individuality and fulfilling its role in promoting international cultural exchange through music. However, maintaining the condition of each individual orchestra member in an unfamiliar environment can often be extremely challenging. In these circumstances, Mr. Watanabe's extensive knowledge brilliantly supports the performances, and his approach to understanding the musicians' personalities and emotions has earned him great reassurance and trust from his fellow musicians. His contributions to the success of each orchestra's overseas performances, and ultimately to the active implementation of numerous overseas tours, have been immense, supporting the dramatic development of Japanese orchestras. For these reasons, we hereby present him with the Watanabe Akio Music Foundation Special Award.
