Yoichi Ochiai x Japan Philharmonic Project VOL.7 "Returning Concert" Satellite Performance in Naha Details Confirmed

This project is the first in the "Shozen Keikokei Oukarai" series, which introduces Japan's outstanding musical culture from an orchestral perspective. The project will perform "Open Leaves" (composed by Dai Fujikura, commissioned by the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra), a chamber music piece featuring Ryukyu classical music and an orchestra, which had its world premiere in a main orchestral performance in August 2023. Together with the people of Okinawa, we will promote two types of "classical music": Ryukyu and Western.
All performances will be accompanied by visual direction by Yoichi Ochiai himself. Visual direction, created by "generative AI" in response to the performance, will bring a sensory experience to the concert that goes beyond just the ears.

The Shuri Castle Satellite Performance (two mini-concerts) on February 23rd was the first time in Shuri Castle's history that a classical music group had the opportunity to perform. Together with students from Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts, who represent the future of culture and the arts, they will perform "Open Leaves" as a dedication at Shuri Castle, where Ryukyu classical music was nurtured, and will support the restoration of Shuri Castle through music. Furthermore, the Naha performance on February 24th will feature young Ryukyu classical musicians and members of the Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra, who will share the joy of music with the people of Okinawa.

About the commissioned new work "Open Leaves" (2023, composed by Dai Fujikura)
This music combines Ryukyu classical music ("Agesakuda Bushi" in this concert) with free-flowing orchestral performance.
The project first encountered composer Dai Fujikura when his work for a telework ensemble, "Longing from afar" (2020), was featured at the Twin Concert held during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In 2022, the project commissioned and premiered "for null" (2022), a collaborative piece featuring a media art piece by Yoichi Ochiai and an orchestra.
This connection led to the launch of the "Jozen Kei Kokei Oukairai" (Succession, Respect, Respect, Respect) series, a commissioned new piece exploring Japanese culture, with Fujikura and I, and this year's first installment will focus on Ryukyuan classical music. This collaboration with Ryukyuan classical musicians was made possible by the fact that they also performed in the Ochiai x Japan Philharmonic Project Vol. 6. Following fieldwork and workshops in Okinawa, the piece will premiere in August 2023.
