Understanding "frontiers" and "other worlds" through socio-cultural history
On Ifukube's "Salome" and Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique"
For Europe, the birthplace of Western music, Japan was literally the epitome of a "periphery." The ideals of the birth of an ideal society were shattered, and the bizarre Romantics turned to the "other world" of their own delusions. Eventually, these ideas overlapped and blended, creating a new movement in "Western music." How do Ifukube's "Salome" and Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" fit into this new movement? We will explore the changes of the era marked by these two masterpieces from the perspective of social and cultural history. We will also present the musical devices embedded in these works, including performances and interviews with Japan Philharmonic violinist Taro Ito. (Note: Instructor Komiya)
