"Germany" and "Brahms" interpreted from a socio-cultural perspective: The German Requiem and Symphony No. 1
The 19th century saw a surge in the movement for German unification, and finally the achievement of that long-cherished dream. How did Brahms, who was born in what is now Hamburg, Germany, and spent the latter half of his life in Vienna, Austria, live through such a turbulent era? Focusing on his "German Requiem" and "Symphony No. 1," two works that are inseparable from his "German consciousness," this program explores Brahms's thoughts engraved in these two legendary works from the perspective of social and cultural history. The program also explores the musical devices embedded in these works through performances and interviews with Japan Philharmonic violinist Shunichiro Sato. (Note: Instructor Komiya)
