Understanding from socio-cultural history
A hot topic in an era of change
On Mozart and Stravinsky
The late 18th century saw the looming French Revolution, while the early 20th century saw the onset of social change triggered by World War I. This program will explore the messages embedded in these works from the perspective of social and cultural history, focusing on notable works by Mozart and Stravinsky, who lived through these "times of change" (Piano Concerto No. 25 and The Rite of Spring). The program will also explore the musical mechanisms embedded in these works, including performances and interviews with Tsutomu Maruyama, guest principal horn player with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. (Note: Instructor Komiya)
