[Important] Program for the 737th Tokyo Subscription Concert in January has been decided

January 14th and 15th, 2022 737th Tokyo Regular ConcertThe program has been decided.

The New Year's regular concert is a "story" that connects "wa" (harmony) and "Vienna" (the Japanese traditional instrument) through the koto.
Our Tokyo Regular Concert in January will feature a solo koto performance, fitting for the Japanese New Year. The program combines the koto concerto "Magic Shadows," left behind by world-renowned composer Ishii Maki, with the classical koto piece "Midare," which has a deep connection to this work. The soloist will be Endo Chiaki, a leading figure in the world of contemporary Japanese music. And continuing the "koto" theme, the concert will begin with music from Schubert's "Rosamunde" (The Magic Harp), which has a harp theme.
The second half of the concert will feature Brahms' Symphony No. 3. Why the combination of Brahms and the koto? The answer lies in a painting by Moriya Tatsushi entitled "Vienna in the Sixth Stage (Brahms and Count Toda's Wife)." The piece is based on the historical fact that Brahms enjoyed the sound of the koto played by the wife of a diplomat in Vienna.
This program traces the history of cultural exchange between Japan and Vienna.
