We also offer programs that create a special feeling, such as "open rehearsals" and "pre-performance lectures on highlights" to learn more about the orchestra and concerts. Group discounts are also available for some performances.

To all school students

A powerful orchestral performance for all students.
As part of the emotional and musical education for children to develop rich hearts,
We provide opportunities to experience authentic art through music appreciation events and online appreciation sessions.

01. Art Appreciation Class

In response to the requests of many teachers who want to "listen to a full-scale orchestral performance in a real concert," the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra rents out halls in the Tokyo metropolitan area to hold many full-scale concerts.
We spend six months to a year consulting with teachers about the purpose and scale of the school performance, as well as the selection of songs, and we make every effort to realize the school's wishes.
We also offer collaborations with school orchestras and brass bands, pre-performance learning sessions prior to school performances, visits to dress rehearsals (final on-stage rehearsals), instrument clinics, etc. Depending on your wishes and budget, we can also perform large pieces that would not normally be performed in school performances.
We also offer group discounts on tickets. Please come and enjoy a performance by the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra as an opportunity to experience authentic live art.

02. Online Music Appreciation Party

As a new form of music appreciation during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have also held "online music appreciation events" using Member's TVU CHANNEL. We will make proposals based on the needs of schools and students, so please contact our staff.

03. Small ensembles, music workshops, internships, work experience, etc.

Chamber Music Arrangement
In addition to orchestral performances, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra also performs approximately 200 times a year as a chamber music group.
Chamber music performances have become a major pillar of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra's activities and have grown into a socially responsible undertaking. The orchestra has expanded its variety of arrangements to include medium- and large-scale chamber music, and has also developed original programs.
Chamber music can be held anywhere people gather, and can deliver music for a variety of purposes, such as corporate-sponsored performances, local events, school appreciation classes, and "music for disaster areas" activities. Chamber music allows for a close and warm exchange of feelings between audience and performer.

Japan Philharmonic Orchestra's Original Program

An example of chamber music

String quartet(2 violins, viola, cello)

It is composed of four string instruments, which are said to have the most wonderful expressive capabilities. The pure and unified tone of the four string instruments creates a world of music that allows you to experience a fascinating world of music. The repertoire is wide, ranging from original classical pieces to popular music and popular songs. There are also pieces that include vocals and solo wind instruments.

Woodwind quintet(Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon)

The woodwind instruments in the orchestra play magnificent solos at crucial moments. Each instrument displays a rich, distinctive tone, creating a rich ensemble.

Brass quintet(2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone, Tuba)

Brass instruments, with their bright and cheerful image, are always popular with children. They have a wide repertoire, from Renaissance pieces to jazz and popular music. The tones are also diverse, ranging from velvety soft and beautiful sounds to dynamic marches, making them enjoyable for anyone, regardless of age.

percussion ensemble

Although we refer to them all as percussion instruments, there are a huge variety of instruments and playing styles. Not only instruments that you would normally only encounter in a concert hall, but also familiar instruments that everyone is familiar with, such as those found in a music room, can, in the hands of a professional, spin a wide variety of music as if by magic.

04. Music Workshop

The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra is actively developing and promoting experiential education programs, centered on music creation workshops. Workshops are gaining attention as a learning opportunity that fosters diversity, creativity, and collaborative skills, which are needed in today's world.
In workshops with members of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, you can discover the charm of music from various angles and broaden your ways of enjoying art.
The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra has invited Michael Spencer (former violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra and former Director of Education at the Royal Opera House) from the UK, a leader in workshops, to develop and promote music creation workshops.
Members of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra are actively learning Spencer's workshop methods, developing their own "creative programs," and acting as facilitators to support participants.

05. Exploration Team, Open Rehearsal, Open Dress Rehearsal

The Orchestra Exploration Team uncovers various secrets surrounding orchestra concerts, including "visiting the dress rehearsal (full rehearsal before the performance)," "backstage tour," "visiting the organ," and "exploring musical instruments."
This is a very popular event, as it allows participants to experience the conductor and the orchestra in a way that they would not normally be able to see or know, and feel closer to the orchestra. Musicians and the Exploration Team Leader will be available to answer any questions you may have, making the actual concert even more enjoyable. Why not join an "Orchestra Exploration Team" yourself?

06. Internship

Through our "internship program" in partnership with universities, we accept several to several dozen students every year. This program provides university students with a period of training at performance venues and in the office, allowing them to experience the practical aspects of orchestra management.
For example, in an internship for a summer concert, you will not only experience a day in the life of a live concert backstage, but you will also learn about the practical aspects of concert-related work, from preparations before the doors open to customer service, merchandise sales, and running social gatherings, all in the lobby.
In recent years, not only students studying arts management but also many students interested in jobs related to economics, management, and education have participated, creating a wide network. There has also been a steady increase in the number of students who experience internships with the Japan Philharmonic and then go on to work in the music industry after graduation.

Recruitment information can be found here

07. Work experience

We accept workplace visits from junior high school students. From the basics of "What is an orchestra?" to lectures and actual work on the characteristics of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the content of performance activities, and the work of each department in the office, students experience the "workplace of an orchestra." By observing a rehearsal, students can experience up close the serious work of the conductor and musicians creating music. They learn what it means to be a professional and that there are various jobs that take place behind the scenes of a concert.
