From Nuremberg to Manchester, Singapore, and Hong Kong, Kah Chung Wong's arrangement of "Pictures at an Exhibition" finally receives its Japanese premiere!
Principal conductor Kah-Chung Wong's arrangement of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" is a creative and ambitious program that fuses Western orchestra with traditional Chinese instruments, featuring soloists from the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO). Unlike the common Ravel arrangement, its most distinctive feature is the incorporation of Chinese folk instruments in a concerto grosso-like format while respecting the original structure of the piano piece. The following five traditional instrument soloists from the SCO join the orchestral sound to create a truly unique "Pictures at an Exhibition."
Dizi (Flute): Lee Ching-Tsung
Yangqin (a stringed instrument): Ma Huang
Huqin (a bowed string instrument such as the erhu): Tan Manman
Biwa (Japanese lute / plucked string instrument): Wang Suwen
Percussion: Benjamin Woo
Singapore, Wong's home country, is a multi-ethnic nation where Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities blend together. To reflect his own identity in his music, he incorporated the traditional Malay hand drum "kompang" and phrases imitating the calls of the Asian coel, a bird popular in Southeast Asia, into a Chinese instrumentation, creating a uniquely Singaporean multicultural soundscape. This ambitious work had a world premiere in front of 75,000 people at the Nuremberg Classic Open Air Music Festival to great success and has been widely broadcast on the German cultural channel 3SAT and the German classical music label BR-Klassik.
In the first half of the day, you can enjoy a truly magnificent performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 by Keigo Mukawa, who has steadily progressed in his career by winning prizes in two prestigious international competitions.
