March 11, 2026: We performed at the Great East Japan Earthquake Memorial and Recovery Ceremony.

Bringing music to disaster-stricken areas

On March 11, 2026, the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, as part of activities based on the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement with Fukushima Prefecture, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra's string quartet appeared at the Great East Japan Earthquake Memorial and Recovery Prayer Ceremony held by Fukushima Prefecture, and performed pieces such as "Gunjo" and "Hana wa Saku," which were composed in response to the earthquake disaster.
The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra has carried out the "Music for Disaster-stricken Areas" musical support activity approximately 380 times in various parts of the Tohoku region, and since 2019 has been running the "Tohoku Dream Project" in Iwate and Fukushima prefectures, which aims to support reconstruction efforts through supporting children's cultural activities.
We signed a comprehensive partnership agreement with Fukushima Prefecture in July 2024, and in addition to continuing to work in the disaster-stricken areas that are working hard to rebuild, we are also working to support the transition of school club activities that are facing challenges to local areas, promote culture within the prefecture, and disseminate information about the disaster-stricken areas.

The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra will continue to believe that music can be a source of strength for society, and will continue its activities in the disaster-stricken areas.
