Japan Phil Series

What is the Japan Phil Series?

The Japan Phil Series is a commissioned series of works by Japanese composers that began in the early days of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. Since the first work (Akio Yashiro's "Symphony") in 1958, it has continued to the present day as a commissioning system unprecedented in the history of Japanese music, with the premise of a concert premiere.

This series was conceived by the late Akeo Watanabe, who was the Principal Conductor at the time, and the composers were selected from a wide range of talent, from Japan's leading masters to newcomers, and the works have a wide variety of tendencies, from classical to avant-garde. Furthermore, many of the pieces that have premiered as a result of this series have already achieved popularity worthy of being called "classics," and the number of such works is too numerous to list, with many being performed again by orchestras both in Japan and abroad other than the Japan Philharmonic, and winning various awards.
